Digital Libraries Initiative: Agreement between Cultural Institutions and Right Holders on Orphan Works

An agreement on copyright was signed today by libraries, archives and right holders, in the presence of Commissioner Viviane Reding. The Memorandum of Understanding on orphan works will help cultural institutions to digitise books, films and music whose authors are unknown, making them available to the public online.

The Commission adopted the eContentplus 2008 work programme and call for proposals on 19 March 2008. The call announcement was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 20 March 2008 (OJ C 74 of 20.3.2008, p. 62). The 2008 call for proposals is now open. The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12 June 2008, 17:00 hrs Luxembourg local time.

ICT 2008 will take place in Lyon, France from 25 - 27 November. The event will include an exhibition showing concrete results of research in and around Europe related to information and communications technologies. This call for exhibition ideas is open to any organisation involved in European research and development as well as deployment projects and associated support activities. This includes universities, research institutes, non-profit organisations, public authorities and commercial companies including small and medium sized enterprises. Submit your proposal via the web site. Deadline for submissions is 5 May 2008.

ICT Event 2008

This conference is Europe's largest ICT research event in 2008. The event is organised by the European Commission in cooperation with the French Presidency of the European Union and will examine European Union priorities in ICT research for over €2 billion of funding available in 2009-2010. More than 4000 participants are expected to attend the event.
